Basic D.I.Y Laying Guide

  • Store your Paving Worx paving on site in close proximity to the project area. Remove packaging from paving. To avoid damage, if you have to remove them from the A-frame pallet before using, carefully stack paving on edge raised off the ground on timber battens. Remember to select paving from different packs as you go along, this enhances colour blending and will help to alleviate any variation in colour that may occur between packs.

  • A layer of PAP7 or crusher dust equivalent spread over the excavated area, raked level and compacted using roller or plate compactor to a depth of 40-50mm preliminary compaction can be made by placing a plank over the PAP7 and walking over it then thoroughly compact the whole area.

  • In a wheelbarrow, make a slightly wet mortar mix of 1 part cement to 5 parts of building sand enough for 2-3m2 at a time. Starting from a corner or straight edge, trowel one mortar bed, placed slightly higher than finished level of the paving. This allows for easy alignment and adjustment for required finished surface level and it also enables any variation in thickness of each slab to be taken up.

  • After laying the first slab, place another bed for the next slab and also lay a strip of mortar where the next joint will be. With the trowel, draw and butter this mortar to the side, thus minimising grouting afterwards.

  • With a rubber mallet, tap each slab down to the required level, keeping a piece of softwood between hammer and slab. Continuous checking of levels and falls should be ongoing during the laying process and should be taken across the top surface profile of a number of slabs.

  • Before proceeding too far, it is important to equalise slab spacings as best as possible, gently shuffle the slab with a twist of the trowel until the joints look even. Use temporary spacers - small pieces of between 10-20mm thicknesses of ply are ideal - when laying these pavers (these should be removed before grouting). Use string lines to ensure rows are straight. After laying, do not walk on the paving for at least 24 hours, thereafter the joints may be grouted.

  • We do not recommend sand as an option for laying our paving in.
